Food Safety Commission of Cabinet Office announced that they had provided the safety evaluation level to use "Natamycin" usually used as an antibiotic as a food additive on February 24.
This Commission will raise the opinion of the evaluation result by March 23.
Consumer groups have voiced opposition for admitting the antibiotic from the aspect of safety and the necessity as a food additive.
However, the Food Safety Commission gave the conclusion with "We have not received the report that the resistant bacteria that originated in the natamycin had caused the material impact for human health".
It explains, "The natamycin is kinds of the antibiotic. The United States, European Union, and other various foreign countries admit widely using it as a preservative for the surface preparation of the cheese and the sausage" according to the home page of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare that consults the Food Safety Commission about the decision of the safety level.
