Genetically modified alfalfa be object to display newly


Display Cooperation Conference of both ministries of Agriculture, Health endorsed

A council Display Cooperation Conference having been set up by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare made the decision on March 23 to display the genetically-modified herbicides tolerance Alfalfa, a kind of a bean sprout nutritious as called, "Father of food", that is expected to sell as precut vegetables and health food.

The Cabinet Office Food Safety Commission that assumed the possibility that a herbicides tolerance genetically modified alfalfa for fodder circulates as food showed the evaluation with "A genetically-modified alfalfa might not ruin person's health" by the safety evaluation.

The Japanese Government including the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry that positively promotes genetically engineered organisms is obligating the display of five genetically-modified foods such as the soybean, corn, the potato, rapeseeds, and cotton seeds.

A genetically-modified alfalfa is newly added by this decision as food to which the display is obligated.
