"Risk of vCJD rises because of retreat of BSE measures": Consumers Union of Japan submits protest statement to Food Safety Commission


Raison d'etre of committee that puts out an unscientific report doubted

"Prion Special Investigation Committee" of the Cabinet Office Food Safety Commission, an independent administrative body, presented the report draft concerning the mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) measures of excluding the cow below the age 20 months March 28 from the blanket-test all cattle for mad cow disease.

Consumers Union of Japan criticized the Committee and the Commission, and submitted the protest statement to Food Safety Commission and the committee on March 29, saying that "The content of the report of the Prion Special Investigation Committee was unscientific" and "The examination is only a formal process to lead the import renewal of the United States beef".

Consumers Union of Japan insisted, "Making the blanket-test all cattle for mad cow disease retreat by the current state the unclarification of neither the appearance of disease mechanism of the mad cow disease nor Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease(vCJD), or a rare and fatal human neurodegenerative condition, patient's death details in Japan amplifies consumer's uneasiness. Japanese Government had to be going to continue the blanket-test all cattle for mad cow disease in the future".

And, the Consumer group showed the anxiety with "The risk of vCJD of Japan rises if Japanese Government restarted by a political conclusion the import of the beef from the United States that had been prohibited since the end of 2003".
