A hazard of soybean isoflavone intake by pregnant woman, infant argument activated


Food Safety Commission proposes description of warning sign about health food including soybean isoflavone

Soybean isoflavone has the Endocrine Disrupters and obstructs the thyroid function.

Food Safety Commission, a risk evaluation organization of the government, of the Cabinet Office executed the safety evaluation, the risk evaluation, of soybean Isofrabon. It is because the food manufacturers applied for health food including the soybean Isofrabon as a Food for specified health uses.

The umbrella organization of this committee clarified that the food manufacturers submitted a lot of objections and rebuttals to Food Safety Commission on June 14.

The special investigation committee decides the final evaluation based on these opinions in July.

The special investigation committee showed the opinion that foods including soybean Isofrabon that was not able to confirm safety existed again by the meeting on June 14 concerning the Food for specified health uses and health food that caused an excessive intake easily.

What is the problem of health food including soybean Isofrabon?

Food Safety Commission (FSC)of the Cabinet Office announced the evaluation result of the Food for specified health uses on April 28 though the food manufacturers grandly advertised and were selling the health food of the soybean Isofrabon content , saying that "It was easy for the woman" and "It is effective in the bone".

The FSC proposed to append the caution mark of the intake of the pregnant woman, the embryo, the baby, and the infant with "Do not take it" to the display of food by the reason that safety was not confirmed. The food manufacturers are shocking because it was an unexpected proposal.

The FSC has examined the risk evaluation of the female hormone action, estrogen action, of soybean Isofrabon based on the result of the research of a domestic and foreign animal experiment and a human examination.

As a result, the FSC proposed appending "Caution mark" from the viewpoint that secured safety pointing out, "It cannot be asserted it was safe clearly" the intake of Isofrabon more than the intake provisionally calculated from "National nourishment investigation result in 2004".

The FSC warned of an excessive intake of health food and the Food for specified health uses including Isofrabon pointing out, "Do not eat with other Isofrabon content supplement" by the proposal.

The FSC that recruits the opinion, public comment, until May 25 is examining the final evaluation result concerning the evaluation result of the announcement in April.

Japan Health Food & Nutrition Food Association, the industry group of health food, submitted the opinion with "It is necessary to take careful correspondence because there was a possibility that confusion is caused" to this committee.

And, the food manufacturer, Fujicco, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, is objecting , saying that "There is no necessity in the caution mark that should be added".

This company has acquired the minister authorization of food that contains Isofrabon in the soft drink as the Food for specified health uses four years ago.

Consumers Union of Japan describes, "To begin with, health food requires an excessive intake. Existence as health food is asked", and is paying attention to whereabouts in the caution mark for this.
