Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare requested a voluntary suspension of sales and the recall to the health food manufacturer Kirin Well Foods Co., Ltd., Koto Ward, Tokyo, on February 13 because the action of the tumor promoter
had been affirmed by the animal study in health food "Kirin Cell Wall Shredding Agaricus Granule" that made kind "Agaricus" of the mushroom a raw material.
This ministry requested the food health risk assessment to Cabinet Office Food Safety Commission at the same time.
Because some researchers had reported on the case of the liver injury and the pulmonitis with the doubts caused by the Agaricus to the science magazine, the National Institute of Health Sciences did the animal study of the health food of three companies with a high market share.
As a result, when the Institute gave the rat the amount from about 5 to about 10 times the intake portion size of the product of the Kirin Well Foods Co., Ltd., this institution did the confirmation of the tumor promoter action.
This institution is not affirming the tumor promoter action of the other two products now,but the Ministry requested the assessment to Food Safety Commission for attention because this institution had not put out the end result.
This Ministry described, "This test result is the one that the tumor promoter action was admitted in the rat. It is not content that caused human thereupon cancer".
However, this ministry roused the restraint of the intake to the consumer at the same time until the risk evaluation of Food Safety Commission went out for the product to which the tumor promoter action was affirmed.
Moreover, this ministry described the Agaricus food including the other two products, "When taking it, consumers should do care because the tumor promoter action had been doubted with one product".
