The problem concerning the pollution of the carbonated drink and the soft drink with the cancer forming substance benzene that U.S. Food and Drug Administration should have solved 16 years ago has surfaced again.
The ascorbic acid, synthesis vitamin C, and sodium benzoate seem to mix together, and to form benzene.
A large amount of carbonated drinks including these additives are sold in Japan regardless of for the child and adults.
When the Japan Consumer Press (JC-Press) investigated the soft drinks sold in the retail store in Minatoku Tokyo on March 9, the reporter found two carbonated drink products that displayed the ascorbic acid (synthesis vitamin C) and sodium benzoate in the label.
The government official of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare described to the Japan Consumer Press (JC-Press), "We gathered information, and were examining whether to inspect the soft drinks".
The specialist of the hygiene science says, "There is a possibility that benzene is generated with the interaction of the ascorbic acid (synthesis vitamin C) and sodium benzoate. The government should clarify the realities immediately by investigating. The introduction of the regulation is requested".
