Sharp voluntarily recalled video all-in-one design television


54 smoke accidents left for as many as two years though distortion of image occurred

A leading supplier of home electronics Sharp, Abeno Ward, Osaka City, published "Apology" notification to check and to repair the Braun tube type color television free of charge in each newspaper on December 17.

It is because the Braun tube type color television that was manufactured and had shipped four years ago had "Trouble of the electronic part". It is a defect of distorting the image besides the noise occurs suddenly when watching television. There is a possibility of smoking, too.

The cause of the defect is "Shortfall of the amount of solder. " in an electronic basic part. 25 complaint and reports were drawn to this company by 2003.

The Public Relations Department this company speaks, "Because the complaints of 29 a year of 2004 had been drawn to our company, our company launched out into this countermeasure". The complaint has gone up to 54 totals.

However, the report of the first claim was February, 2002 after one year the shipment. This company has individually responded to the complaint from users without judging the defect of the television for two years after this company receives the first report.
"Solder defect of the electronic part" tends to happen frequently by recalling and the repair case with the television. Many of recalling and the repair cases have occurred in general-purpose goods.

This company is not clarifying the manufacturer name of the electronic part that caused the defect. This company admitted, only "Imports from foreign countries".

Many of complaints that cause the defect accident show the tendency to be going to concentrate from the shipment on the manufacturer in 1 or 2 years over the recall and the repair case with the television that occupies the position as durable consumer goods.

In the background of frequent occurrence of the accident, there are loose inspection to general-purpose parts and negligent quality controls. And, the notification that users do not understand easily spurs frequent occurrence of the accident.

The consumer group proposes, "Certainly, if users read sentences of the notification, they can guess the ignition accident doesn't happen. Whether it is safe however even if users breathe in the smoking smoke or not? It doesn't understand only from that notification. Manufacturers should devise the content of the notification more".
